Hand Woven Cane and Pre-Woven Cane
Caning is a technique used to weave chair seats, backs, and other furniture items, whether they are new pieces or undergoing restoration, using material sourced from the rattan plant.
Many seats, backs, and shelves can be removed and sent to Caning Canada for caning. For more details, please visit our shipping page.
The rattan vine is native to Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia, typically growing to lengths of 100 to 300 feet.
Before being exported, rattan stems are cut to uniform lengths, and the bark is stripped away in narrow sections. Rattan resembles bamboo but is a solid, flexible vine that requires support, whereas bamboo is hollow and stands upright on its own.
It's important to differentiate between chair caning and wickerwork. Chair caning involves the application of rattan cane or rattan peel to furniture pieces like chair backs and seats. In contrast, wickerwork refers to the craft of weaving materials such as natural willow, rattan reeds, and other manufactured or paper-based cords like Danish cord or fibre rush.
Cane is a durable material that is often left in its natural state, developing beautiful colors as it ages.
As an eco-friendly option, cane provides a light and airy aesthetic for a room while remaining modern and stylish.
Traditionally, cane is woven into various webbed patterns using different weaving techniques.
