History of J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik's and Their Danish Cord Chairs
J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik, founded by Niels Otto Møller in the 1940s, is a renowned Danish furniture manufacturer known for its exceptional craftsmanship and timeless designs. The company has a rich history spanning several decades, during which it has produced iconic chairs that have become synonymous with Danish design.
In the 1950s, J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik began to gain international recognition. Chair models 71 and 55, designed in 1951, were selected for the prestigious Frank Lloyd Wright 'Hanna House' project in San Francisco. They were beginning the company's exports to Germany and the United States. As demand increased, the factory moved to a more extensive workshop in Aarhus, Denmark.

The 1960s brought even greater success for J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik. With the purchase of a new plot of land, the factory expanded from 150 to 3000 square meters, reflecting the growing demand for their iconic chairs. In 1962, Møller designed chair models 78 and 62, which featured clean lines and a refined aesthetic. This design and others introduced during this decade embodied the company's commitment to combining the best of craft traditions with modern manufacturing techniques.

Chair model 82, nicknamed the "Embassy Chair," gained popularity for its sophisticated design and became widely used in embassies worldwide. The complex chair model 83, introduced in 1974, showcased the company's advancements in craftsmanship and production. During this decade, the company began exporting to Japan, further solidifying its global presence.

In the 1980s, J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik received accolades for seamlessly blending traditional craftsmanship with modern manufacturing techniques. Chair models 85 and 68, designed in 1981, exemplified the company's commitment to timeless design and functional excellence. Tragically, in 1994, Jens Ole Møller, the eldest son of Niels Otto Møller, passed away suddenly at the age of 50. His brother, Jørgen Henrik Møller, took over leadership of the factory, continuing the family legacy.

Throughout the 2000s, J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik remained at the forefront of the design world. Their chairs graced numerous esteemed establishments, including the renowned restaurant Noma in Copenhagen. In 2016, Kirsten Ann Møller, representing the third generation of the family-run factory, joined the company, bringing new perspectives and ideas, marking an exciting era of innovation and expansion with the introduction of the counterstool and barstool model 77C and 77B in the Møller production. These models were the first new designs released since 1981 and demonstrated the continued commitment to exceptional craftsmanship and Danish design principles.
