Welcome to Caning Canada! At Caning Canada, we are passionate about furniture weaving and providing our customers with high-quality materials. We specialize in Danish cord, a versatile and durable material for weaving chairs, stools, and other furniture. The paper cord used at Caning Canada is made of FSC-certified, sustainable materials. We use three different colours of paper cord. Natural paper cord made of unbleached paper; white paper cord which has been bleached, and black cord which has been dyed. Cloverleaf Chair woven in Danish cord Chair woven in Danish cord Porch rocking Chair woven in Danish cord Chair woven in Danish cord Cloverleaf Chair History of Danish Cord: Danish cord, also known as paper cord or weave cord, has a rich history that dates back to the 1940s in Denmark. Thanks to its strength and flexibility, it gained popularity as a material for seats and backs of furniture. Danish cord quickly became a favourite choice for designers and craftsmen due to its ability to create intricate patterns and unique designs. Today, it continues to be a timeless choice for those who appreciate the beauty of woven furniture. At Caning Canada, we take pride in offering high-quality Danish cord that meets the standards of professional craftspeople. Our Danish cord is sourced from trusted suppliers, ensuring its integrity and durability throughout the weaving process. Whether restoring a vintage piece or creating a new masterpiece, Danish cord is an excellent choice for furniture weaving. Please browse our range of Danish cord options and elevate your furniture with this remarkable material's timeless beauty and durability. Experience the art of weaving with Caning Canada today! Danish Cord Weaving Material Details: Danish paper cord is a twisted paper cord used to weave furniture since the 1920s. The Danish cord is a robust 3-ply paper product made with wood fibres. With regular use and proper care, it is estimated to last up to 60 years. See below for Danish paper cord care and maintenance. The cord is slightly waxed to resist dirt and stains. Danish modern furniture gained popularity after World War II in Denmark and other European countries. It offers several key advantages: 1. Durability: The Danish cord is known for its exceptional strength, making it a long-lasting choice for weaving projects. It can withstand heavy use and retain its shape and strength even after years. 2. Flexibility: The Danish cord's flexibility allows for easy weaving, enabling intricate patterns and designs to be beautifully created. This versatility makes it suitable for various furniture styles, from vintage to modern. 3. Comfort: The woven nature of the Danish cord provides a comfortable seating experience. The cord has a slight give, adapting to the body's shape, ensuring a supportive and pleasant sitting experience. 4. Aesthetics: The Danish cord brings furniture a unique and visually appealing touch. Its natural, earthy tones add warmth and character to the overall design. Additionally, its intricate patterns can enhance the beauty of any piece of furniture. From the underside of the chair, specialty hook nails attach the cord. These nails are referred to as Danish hooks or "L" nails. Danish hook nails are designed specifically for Danish paper cord woven furniture. The Danish hook nails are imported from Denmark. If your chair has staples or other fasteners, it's okay. Caning Canada can supply and install the Danish hook nails for a small fee before restoring the cord. My Danish cord chair is breaking at the front and back edges. Can you fix the broken pieces? The front and back runs of the Danish cord tend to be breaking points of this type of furniture after long-term use. Once these pieces of material break, it is time to replace the Danish cord surface. Contact Caning Canada to have your Danish cord chair repaired. Single Rail Danish Cord Weaving Danish cord weaving is typically one-sided and only wraps around a single rung on all sides. This weaving pattern is referred to as the basket weave. Circa 1960 Teak Ladder Back Chair, Svegards Svegards Markaryd Ladder Back Dining Chair, 1960s Danish Cord Chair Danish Cord Chair Double Rail Danish Cord Weaving The CH 23 dining chair was one of the first chairs Hans J. Wegner designed exclusively for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1950 at age 35. The CH 23 chair incorporates many sophisticated details; the most notable for a seat weaver is the double-rail woven seat. Double Danish cord has an extra step in the weaving process where the weaving wraps around two rungs, and all the Danish cord material is pulled through the vertical wraps. Danish Cord Woven in the Rush Pattern or Envelope Weave Some chairs are woven in the rush pattern or envelope weave using Danish cord material. The rushing pattern Danish cord mimics traditional rushing with the Danish cord material. In 1949, Wegner adapted an existing technique known as "envelope weaving" to the Danish cord. Often, these chairs have extensive slots that the Danish cord must be fed through, which makes weaving these seats more labour-intensive. Examples of this style of Danish cord chair include the CH 24 Wishbone or “Y” Chair, designed by Wegner and initially released in 1949, and the Model 316 Chair by Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard Nielsen for Søborg Møbelfabrik 1958. Yugoslavian Folding Rope Chairs There are different weaving techniques and patterns used for Yugoslavian rope chairs. Most chairs are designed to accept a specific pattern. Double Sided Danish Cord Weaving Some chairs are woven in the rush pattern using Danish cord material. The rushing pattern Danish cord mimics traditional rushing with the Danish cord material. The woven backrest of Hans Wegner's Chair 25 is visible on both sides, providing visual beauty from all angles. Beautiful from all angles — “A chair is to have no backside,” said Hans J. Wegner, designer of the Easy Chair. “It should be beautiful from all sides and angles.” Double-sided Danish cord weaving techniques differ depending on the design of the chair. Examples of this style of Danish cord chair include the CH 24 Wishbone or “Y” Chair, designed by Wegner and originally released in 1949, and the Model 316 Chair by Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard Nielsen for Søborg Møbelfabrik 1958. Wishbone Chair Special Edition Pattern Carl Hansen & Son issued a special edition of the Wishbone chair woven using a no-nail technique. Caning Canada loves this weaving technique and offers it not only on the Wishbone chair; we all offer this weave on other chairs originally woven using the envelope weaving technique. Chair Conversion to Danish Cord If you want to breathe new life into your fabric, strapped, corded, or pleather upholstered Danish chairs with Danish cord, look no further then Vintage Chair Canada. Danish Cord Furniture - Care Some people spray a scotch guard on the Danish cord surfaces to stop stains from absorbing. Paper cord typically doesn't require maintenance or very little maintenance, as the strong paper cord is designed to last for years. If you need to clean the seat, wipe it with a tightly wrung soft cloth with a neutral, colourless soap solution. Please don't do this too often, as it can cause undo wear to the paper cord. The paper cord is treated with a thin layer of wax to help prevent stains. Vacuuming once in a while is always a good practice. If a stain does come on the paper cord, we recommend using a tightly wrung soft cloth to remove as much of the liquid as possible. Be careful not to rub the liquid into the paper cord, but dab the cloth gently on the stained area. How can the dream weavers assist? • Seagrass | Caning Canada

Seagrass Woven Chair Weaving Seagrasses are the only flowering plants able to live in seawater and pollinate while submerged. They often grow in large groups giving the appearance of terrestrial grassland or underwater meadow. The seagrass used in chair weaving comes from Asia. The seagrass is twisted to form a green rope material when newly woven and will brown as it ages. Seagr ass is a courser and more rigid material than the Danish cord material. The diameter of seagrass varies drastically within a coil. Because of this, the number of wraps can vary between chairs, and the pattern can have gaps if woven in the rushing or envelope weave. It tends to sit more proud and offers beautiful tones in the twisted gra ss. Seagrass can be woven in different patterns, as shown above; however, many chairs are designed to accept a specific gauge or size of material and pattern. Some exceptions to this rule are ladderback chairs and stools. Giovanni (Gio) Ponti Woven Chairs Giovanni (Gio) Ponti - 1891–1979 1927 - The Cassina brothers founded their company, Cassina, in Meda, Italy. 1935 - The company was renamed Figli di Amadeo Cassina. 1951 - Cassina produced Gio Ponti's first Model 646 Leggera (light) chair, inspired by the light ladderback chairs with woven seats designed by Giuseppe Gaetano Descalzi in 1807. 1957 - The birth of the award-winning Model 699 Superleggera (super light) was designed while Cassina was outfitting luxury ship liners with Gio Ponti. The chair weighed in at just 1.7 kg. The frames were produced at Cassina’s factory and then transported to Chiavari, where the seats were woven in cane by pieceworkers or seat weavers. Borge Mogensen Woven Chairs Armchair Model 157 Model 537 Oresund Chair Chair J39 Børge Mogensen was born in Aalborg, Denmark, 1914 - 1972 He began his studies in furniture design at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen in 1936. Borge Mogensen made the concept of “Danish Modern” known worldwide. Armchair Model 157 Mid-Century Børge Mogensen Armchair Model 157 woven in seagrass for Søborg Møbelfabrik 1954. Model 537 Oresund Chair Model 537 Oresund chairs were designed by Borge Mogensen for Karl Andersson & Söner, 1955. These chairs stem from the first production period. The design was inspired by American Shaker furniture. It is made of oiled oak and paper cord. Chair J39 This is Mogensen’s most famous chair. The J39 Chair earned the nickname ‘The People’s Chair’ for its simplicity and versatility in 1947. The vision was to create high-quality functional furniture at a reasonable price to make the ideas of simple modernism popular among the people. Mogensen decided that the furniture should all be based on established cabinet-maker’s principles using local production without compromising on quality.

Binding cane is also used to wrap lamps and pod chairs and to create magazine shelves on vintage tables. Hans Olsen's rocking chair is an iconic piece that creates intrigue and interest in its simple, airy form. More than once, I've come across beautiful cane back lounge chairs that have been incorrectly restored by drilling holes through the frame of the backrest. There is no reason to butcher these excellent woven chairs. The backrest can be removed and mailed to Caning Canada at our winter site in Fort Langley from mid-October to mid-April for expert cane restoration. Learn More Hans J. Many of these woven surfaces can be removed from the frame and mailed to Caning Canada for cane restoration. When a woven piece has multiple panels and curves, cane repair becomes a new dance. Every piece wants you to step through the cane installation in order. When you get the dance right, the cane submits and shows its appreciation for decades of beauty. You can extend the enjoyment of this beauty with proper care and maintenance of the woven surfaces. Learn More Handwoven Cane Fibre Rush Fibre rush is a durable one-ply, a twisted paper resembling real bull rushes. Paper fibre or "fibre reed" was introduced when China had an embargo on rattan reed exportation. Paper fibre became the substitute for natural rattan reed. Learn More Fibre Rush Shaker Tape Shaker tape is cotton cordage material available in multiple colours. We stock beige Shaker tape. Shaker tape is a beautiful way to reuse broken wicker or reed chairs with a relatively unobstructed, sturdy frame. The Shaker's Initially designed in the late 1700s by followers of the religious group the Shaking Quakers, shaker furniture has become a staple in our interior design, known for being timeless and elegant. Shaker-style furniture has clean lines, tapered legs, and minimalist designs. It's simple, functional, practical, and elegant. Early Shaker furniture artisans focused on simplicity and integrity in their designs because they believed excessive ornamentation or decoration was a sin of pride. "Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing more to take away." Antoine de Saint-Exupery Shaker furniture has become increasingly popular for traditional and modern homes as our busy lifestyles cause us to seek simplicity and calmness in our home décor. Ladder Back Chairs Most often seen in Shakers' woven-seated rocking chairs, ladder backs are backrests made out of a few wooden boards which run horizontally to the chair's posts. Yet, Shakers could mould soft or hard lines into these sections to develop a beautiful linear flow, and these wooden rocking chairs were very lightweight so that they could be hung from a nail in the wall when they weren't in use. Paints and Stains Shakers painted or stained most of their furniture with a specific variety of sanctioned colours they could use, which include yellows, reds, greens, and blues. Furniture Design Styles Modern furniture - The Modernist movement began in the early 1900s with the Bauhaus School of Design. Mid-century Modern - a design style of roughly the 1930s through the mid-1960s characterized by clean lines, streamlined organic forms, and lack of embellishment. Vintage refers to something authentic from an era at least twenty years ago, while retro is new items made to imitate past items. Bohemian is personal and relaxed. Boho styles are not styled for any other person’s enjoyment but your own. Japandi design combines the elements of Japanese and Scandinavian designs to create beautiful simplistic functionality and a connection to nature. Scandinavian design refers to the pieces of Demark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Scandinavian design has returned due to its clean lines, natural elements, and emphasis on sustainability. Hygge (pronounced “hyoo-guh”) is a Danish word that most closely translates to cozy in English. A minimalist home showcases pieces like an art gallery and isn't cluttered. Eclectic interiors can be considered “opposites attract,” for example, mixing a farmhouse-style chair with an art deco piece. French country balances old with new. Some pieces in the room are new; others might be vintage finds or an heirloom that’s been passed down. Hollywood interior design is a combination of mid-century modern and art deco. Lines are clean decorative details, balancing beauty and function. Rustic interiors let natural beauty shine with wood, stone, and other organic elements. Rustic allows the character of each piece to stand out. Coastal or cottage styles create a soothing place incorporating clean and simple with pops of natural tones and colours.

Pre-woven cane is also referred to as cane webbing, pressed-in cane, machine cane, sheet cane, and spline cane. Binding Cane or Rattan Binding cane or rattan is used to weave Danish midcentury modern furniture. We need a photo of your binding cane piece to provide an estimate, as we need to estimate the amount of material required, the attachment technique, and the weaving method. Hand Cane - Traditional Seven-Step Hand Caning (with drilled holes) Holes are drilled around the perimeter of the chair frame, and individual strands of cane are hand woven through the series of drilled holes. Other names for hand caning include strand cane, hole-to-hole caning, rattan, wicker, lace caning, traditional caning, and natural strand caning. Riempie Chairs Riempie chairs can be traced back to the traditional 17th-century Dutch, Flemish, and English chairs. Riempies or readily available leather straps were used in place of cane or reed strips which had to be imported. Now I don't do leatherwork. However, I have found that weaving the Riempie chairs with two different gauges of cane provides a clean, textured, yet beautifully finished seat that is well suited to the chairs. Blind Cane / French Cane Blind Caning / French Caning is when the holes of a hand-caned chair do not go through the chair frame. Each strand of cane is cut to size, woven, and then glued into the individual holes. Double-sided caning is when both sides of the chair frame are caned. Double-caned surfaces are also usually blind-caned. Hanging Medallions Woven in Cane Sunshine Pattern Hanging medallions can be woven in a sunrise pattern or using the seven-step hand cane method. The rising sun pattern forms a sun ray with tight holes at the bottom and wider-spaced holes along the sides and top of the ray. The setting sun pattern forms a sun ray with tight holes at the top and the sides of the ray and wider spaced holes at the bottom. Specialty Handwoven Cane, Pre-Woven Cane, and Rattan Furniture Repair Caning is a method of weaving chair seats, backs, and other furniture, whether the piece is new or the weaving is being restored with material derived from the rattan plant. Many of the seats, backs, and shelves can be removed and mailed to Caning Canada for caning. Check out our shipping page for more information. The rattan vine is native to Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia. The vines typically grow 100 to 300 ft in length. Before export, the rattan stems are cut to uniform lengths, and the bark is removed in narrow strips. The rattan vine looks similar to bamboo. Rattan is a solid, flexible vine that needs support, whereas bamboo is hollow and holds itself upright. Some folks confuse furniture or chair caning with wickerwork. To clarify, chair caning is the craft of applying rattan cane or rattan peel to a piece of furniture, such as the backs or seats of chairs. Wicker or wickerwork is the craft of weaving materials such as natural willow or rattan reeds and other manufactured and paper-based cords like Danish cord or Fibre rush. Cane is durable and typically left in its natural state and will colour beautifully as it ages. Cane is a beautiful eco-friendly material, providing a light and airy feel for a room while still being modern and stylish. Cane is traditionally woven into different webbed patterns utilizing various weaving methods, as detailed below. Cane Furniture Care & Use Cane can be cleaned using a wood soap; an example is Murphy's Oil Soap and a soft cloth. Do not use the chair for two days to fully dry the cane. Oil the cane on your furniture once or twice a year using lemon or teak oil. Apply the oil to the porous bottom side of the cane and wipe off the excess after 15 minutes. Avoid putting cane furniture in hot, dry or sunny rooms. Also, avoid placing cane furniture near heat vents as it will dry out the cane and make it brittle. Never stand on a cane chair. Cane is extremely strong when weight is evenly distributed across the surface. The cane stretches when you sit on it, which allows for the stress of even weight distribution. Over time the stretch will sag. When the cane loses its ability to stretch, it will begin to break along the chair from or within the sag. You can extend the life of your cane furniture by wetting the underside of the chair with a warm wet towel and then letting it dry to tighten the sag. Do not use the chair for two days to let it fully dry and tighten. The cane doesn't need to be sealed or stained as it will naturally colour with age. If you choose to stain the cane, use an oil-based stain on the top side of the cane, not the porous bottom of the cane. The bottom side is used to oil your cane to retain moisture. • Fibre Rush | Caning Canada

Fibre Rush Woven Chairs Fibre rush is a durable one-ply, a twisted paper resembling real bull rushes. Paper fibre or "fibre reed" was introduced when China had an embargo on rattan reed exportation. Paper fibre became the substitute for natural rattan reed. Material is wrapped around the four dowels framing the square of a seat, creating four triangles. Fibre Rush Chair Converted to Laced Danish Cord If you're looking to modernize your fibre rush chairs consider our absolute favourite no-nail Danish cord option! Care & Maintenance for Fibre Rush Care and maintenance for fibre rush woven chairs are the same as the care and maintenance of Danish cord, as both materials are twisted paper. Caning Canada often converts rawhide chairs to fibre rush or Danish cord. They can easily accept Shaker tape as well. The French Canadian Cloverleaf chairs are hand-carved in Quebec and found woven in rawhide, seagrass, and fibre rush. Caning Canada doesn't offer leatherwork. We love to see these beautiful chairs restored using Danish cord , fibre rush, seagrass , or Shaker tape . The frame of the Cloverleaf and other ladder-back chairs are typically unobstructed, allowing the restoration material to suit the chair owner's taste. Isn't it wonderful when an unobstructed frame offers the flexibility to accent many personal decors? I love it.
