At Caning Canada, we don’t just repair chairs — we bring beloved pieces back to life. In a world of disposable everything, there’s something deeply satisfying about handing a client their grandparents’ dining chairs or a treasured Wishbone that now looks and feels better than the day it left the factory.

Our customers keep telling us the same thing: the passion we have for this craft shines through in every strand of Danish cord, every strand of cane, and every conversation along the way.

Since 2020, David and Laurie have been travelling Canada in their weaving truck, restoring mid-century masterpieces and antique rockers with hand-woven seats that will last another lifetime. Laurie started weaving in 1986!

The reviews pouring in from Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary, Edmonton, Kelowna, Toronto, Ottawa — and even south to Seattle — prove that when you treat every project like it’s your own family heirloom, people notice.

Why Passion Makes the Difference in Chair Caning and Danish Cord Weaving

Two wooden chairs on grass; one with frayed rope seat, the other restored. Text expresses gratitude for craftsmanship and mentions a museum.

You can teach technique. You can’t teach care. That’s what separates okay restoration from the kind that makes grown adults tear up when they see their chairs finished.

Laurie and David treat every Wegner, Møller, Cesca, or no-name thrift-store find with the same reverence. They clean, oil, re-glue, tighten, and weave as if the piece will one day belong to their own grandchildren.

Clients feel it immediately — in the quick replies, the honest quotes, the extra polish on a leg, the text messages with progress photos. That genuine pride in handwork done properly, in an age when almost nothing is made by hand anymore, creates connection. And that connection turns first-time clients into lifelong fans who bake us cookies and refer their friends for years.

Every week we hear it: “These were my parents’ chairs.” “This rocker was my grandmother’s.” “We thought we’d have to throw them out.”

Instead, they become conversation pieces again — proudly displayed, comfortably sat in, and passed down with new stories woven right into the seats.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How long does restoration usually take?

Drop-off/pick-up jobs are typically 1–2 weeks depending on schedule. Mail-in projects average 2–4 weeks door-to-door.

2. Do you only do Danish cord?

No! We specialize in Danish cord (laced & unlaced), hand caning, pre-woven cane spline, seagrass, fibre rush, Shaker tape, French caning, and porch cane. See all materials: https://www.caningcanada.com/danish-cord-weaving (and other service pages).

3. How much does it cost?

Transparent pricing based on weave type and size — Danish cord starts at $225 per seat, hand caning from $4.00 per hole, pre-woven cane from $100 per panel. Text photos for an exact quote within hours.

4. Can you repair structural damage too?

Absolutely — re-gluing, minor leg repairs, frame tightening, oil finishing — whatever your piece needs to be both beautiful and strong.

5. Is it worth restoring instead of buying new?

I won't tell you how to spend your hard earned money but don't you get tired of spending it again and again for low quality. Restoration typically costs 30–60 % of replacement value, lasts decades longer, keeps family history alive, and saves approximately 80 % of the carbon footprint of buying new furniture.
